If you have ever killed a plant by loving it too much (or forgetting it entirely), the Snake Plant — Dracaena trifasciata, once called Sansevieria — was practically designed for you.
Why it is so hard to kill
Snake Plants store water in their thick, upright leaves, so they can go 2–3 weeks without watering. They tolerate low light, dry indoor air, and a wide temperature range.
The fastest way to kill a Snake Plant is overwatering. When in doubt, wait another week.
The air-purifying part
Snake Plants were part of NASA’s Clean Air Study. They help filter common indoor toxins and — unusually — release oxygen at night.
How to care for it
- Light: Anything from low light to bright, indirect sun.
- Water: Only when the soil is fully dry.
- Soil: A free-draining cactus/succulent mix.
- Pot: Always use a drainage hole.
